Even though a new teaser trailer for ‘Krypton’ was released this weekend during SDCC 2017 the people who attended the panel yesterday were treated to a trailer of the pilot episode. The panel started off with the pilot trailer followed by discussions with DC Comics President Geoff Johns, actor Cameron Cuffe, showrunner Damian Kindler, and executive producer Cameron Welsh. There was a lot of name dropping by the panel and the main villain was confirmed as Brainiac along with appearances from Doomsday and heroes like Hawkwoman, Nightwing, Flamebird, and Adam Strange.

“It’s long overdue to see Brainiac on screen” – Geoff Johns

The show is turning out to be bigger and bolder than people were expecting when details first came out in 2014. Even though the show is set in Krypton 200 years before the birth of Kal-El, it will connect with present day. There will be a conspiracy involving Superman and time travel will be involved:

“My name is Adam Strange. I come from a time long after this and I need you to help me save your grandson.” – Geoff Johns

It sounds like a lot of money and time has been spent on the show and it bodes well given the details that came out of the panel. Given that the show is airing on SyFy I don’t think it paints a bad picture for the show as the channel is going through a re-branding and it looks like they are using shows like ‘Krypton’ to show that the channel is done with subpar movies and shows. We can only hope that the release date doesn’t get delayed like the production dates when they said it would start in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Here are a few standout quotes from the panel.

“Just because things haven’t been done on television yet doesn’t mean they can’t be.” – Geoff Johns

“The stakes are very real. The show is all about how Superman’s legacy comes to be that legacy.” – Cameron Cuffe

“There’s an undying theme of hope at the center of Superman’s mythology. That’s why he’s my favorite.” – Geoff Johns

“He [Brainiac] has a really deep, rich history. He is the nexus point between man and machine, which is an incredibly real thing to talk about now.” – Damian Kindler

“It changes the stakes of the show completely… It’s not a look backwards. It’s quite unique. It allows us to deepen and expand upon the known mythology,” – Cameron Welsh

The following interview from IGN talks with Cameron Cuffe, Damian Kindler, and Cameron Welsh. The interview runs for 10 minutes.

The first trailer that was released 3 months was taken down. There are still reaction videos on YouTube, but you can never see the trailer properly. I was able to find the trailer on Twitter and as you can see the teaser from SDCC 2017 doesn’t have any new footage apart from a few quick character shots which is disappointing.
